How to Determine Monster XP for D&D

In the "Dungeons and Dragons" game, one player takes on the role of Dungeon Master (DM), and the other players control Player characters (PC's). Frequently, the DM will pit the PC's against vile monsters to promote heroic storytelling. PC's who defeat monsters are rewarded experience points (XP) that accumulate throughout play and lead to a stronger PC. The DM must calculate how much XP a monster is worth by looking up the monster's Challenge Rating (CR) in a book called the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG).

  Open the Dungeon Master's Guide to page 38, which contains a chart titled "Table 2-6: Experience Points Awards."

  Locate the column with the Challenge Rating (CR) of the monster. The Monster Manual entry for the monster will list its CR along with the rest of its statistics.

  Locate the row that corresponds to one PC's Character Level.

  Write down the XP amount listed at the intersection of the row and column determined in the previous two steps.

  Divide the XP amount by the number of players in the group that helped defeat the monster.

  Repeat Step 3 through Step 5 for each player that participated in the encounter.
