General
General feats are features that will benefit most classes and types of characters. For example, the Agile feat makes balancing and escaping easier for your character. This would benefit fighters, wizards, clerics, rangers, but mostly thieves. Another feat that would benefit all classes is Self-Sufficient. This allows your character to heal better and will give your character a better chance of survival in difficult circumstances.
Metamagic
Metagmagic feats allow spell casters such as wizards, sorcerers and clerics to cast spells more easily or make the spells more powerful. One feat that makes spell casting easier is Quicken Spell. With this feat, your character can cast a spell by simply thinking about it. A feat that will make spells more powerful is Enlarge Spell. This feat allows your spell caster to cast effective spells from a greater distance, which is handy in combat.
Item Creation
Item Creation is another category of feats that primarily benefits spell casters. These feats allow your spell-casting character to create items that will benefit spells and abilities. An example of an Item Creation feat is Scribe Scroll. This feat will allow your character to create scrolls from which spell casters can read. This saves your character time and energy from memorizing spells and also gives the caster an extra spell. The scroll can only be used once.
Fighter Bonus Feats
Fighter Bonus Feats are typically found in the General category. All classes can benefit from Fighter Bonus Feats, but fighters benefit the most. Since the role of fighters is to get in melee combat, you want to choose feats that will allow your fighter to withstand blows or deal more powerful blows. One example is Improved Unarmed Strike, which will allow your fighter character to deal large amounts of damage to enemies even if your character has lost his weapon.
