Dungeon & Dragons Campaign Ideas

There comes a time in every Dungeon Master's life where they feel that pre-constructed campaigns just aren't cutting it. Maybe the pre-constructed campaigns aren't providing enough of a challenge for the other players or have become too predictable. Maybe, as dungeon master, you just want to try your hand at campaign writing just to experience another aspect of the game. No matter what your reason for venturing into creating your own campaign it is important that the story engage the other players.

Find a Dragon Egg
- New campaigns often start in a town where the adventurers are hanging out after finishing their last adventure. Someone in town, possibly a crazy wizard or questionable merchant, hires them to track down a dragon egg. The route to the egg can take the adventurers through several different terrains including an enchanted forest or high into the mountains.
Unfolding Prophecy
- Prophecy plays a big role in the world of fantasy. The adventuring group could be in charge of seeing that the key player in the prophecy reaches their destination safely without being assassinated or they could try to stop an evil or crazed wizard or ruler from fulfilling a prophecy that would forever cast the land into darkness.
Find a Lost King
- A ruler has died and the only heir to the throne is a child, born out of wedlock, who has been kept secret from everyone in the world except for the king's most trusted adviser. That adviser hires the group to find the heir and bring him or her to the castle. In a plot twist, when the group returns with the heir, the adviser attempts to carry out a coup to overthrow and possibly kill the new and inexperienced ruler so that he can take control of the kingdom.
Look for a Lost Civilization
- A local story tells of how an earthquake, volcano or other natural disaster destroyed an entire civilization many years prior. Rumors have reached the area that people from that civilization have been spotted in recent weeks. The campaign group decides to investigate these rumors and try and find what is left of the civilization.
