How to Create a Fantasy Character Profile

Whether you are creating a fantasy character for a tabletop role-playing game, an MMORPG video game or a live-action role-playing game, this is a process in which you can really allow yourself to embrace your creativity and run with it. However, it is also important to work within a structure, covering all the small details so that your character becomes as three-dimensional as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip open whatever relevant RPG source books or game guides that you have to the character creation section and locate the character sheet if there is one. Copy the character sheet with a scanner or copy machine, or copy it onto a sheet of paper by hand.

    • 2

Brainstorm and conceptualize what type of character you would like to create before filling out the character sheet. Consider whether you would have more fun playing a fierce, sword-wielding warrior woman with a score to settle, or a reclusive, timid sorcerer with more magical power than he knows what to do with. Is she of a specific fantasy race, such as an elf, dwarf or satyr? Remember that there is no one correct archetype, and unique characters are more fun to play.

    • 3

Peg down all the basic identifying information about your character, such as where he was born, how old he is, what he does for a living and what his name is. Consider what a basic day-in-the-life of your character would look like -- that is, before he gets swept up into the epic adventure that is coming his way.

    • 4

Decide what your character's strengths and weaknesses are. Most RPGs have some system for assigning points to various different sets of attributes, such as physical, social and mental attributes. Consider which of these attributes your character is truly impressive in, which he is weak in and in which he can simply hold his ground. If your character needs to get into a high-security room, is he likely to use brute force to break down the door, manipulate the guard into letting him in or figure out how to crack the code?

    • 5

Consider what type of special powers and skills your character has, keeping in mind that a character that specializes in one or two areas is oftentimes more intriguing than a "jack-of-all-trades." Has your character spent years studying sorcery and can use his magic to play with the perceptions of others? Can she hit a bullseye with her bow and arrow from 500 feet away?

    • 6

Fill out your character sheet based on the specific rules and structure of the game for which you are creating your character, using any relevant source books when necessary.
