DIY Drop Pods

Drop pods are models created by hobbyists and role-playing game enthusiasts. They are supposed to be the vehicles by which space marines are transferred to a planet's surface from an orbiting ship. You can buy pre-made drop pod models, but they tend to be expensive. If you are a role-playing game enthusiast and are working from a limited budget, you can easily build your own drop pod from common household materials.

Instructions

  1. Stencils

    • 1

Print out the stencils in the resources. Written on each stencil is the number of copies of each piece that is required for the model. Make sure to make enough copies of each stencil.

    • 2

Cut the stencils out of paper.

    • 3

Glue the cutout paper to a 5 mm foam board and a 1 mm card with a glue stick. The pieces will also be labeled with the type of material for which they are intended.

    • 4

Let the glue dry for three to five minutes.

    • 5

Cut the stencils out of the foam using the utility knife. You should have three wings cut from 5 mm foam, six 2-piece wing side covers cut from 1 mm card, ome base cut from 10 mm foam, three doors cut from 1mm card, one roof piece cut from 1mm card, and three door covers cut from 1 mm card.

    • 6

Cut out the base twice, once cutting along the notches in its sides, and once without the notches, just as a simple hexagram.

    Assembly

    • 7

Attach the two pieces of the base together, one atop the other, using glue. The side with the notches will be the bottom of the base, and the simple hexagram will be the top.

    • 8

Glue two of the wing side-pieces to the sides of each of the three wings.

    • 9

Fit the wings onto the bottom base by applying PVA glue to the bottom sides of the wing and setting them on the bottom piece of the base.

    • 10

Fold the side doors along the dotted lines on the stencil.

    • 11

Attach the side doors to the wings, the base and the roof.

    • 12

Glue the cover pieces to the side doors. Line up the folds on the dotted lines of the stencils.

    Detailing

    • 13

Paint your drop pod a base coat of black.

    • 14

To simulate the look of bolts, dab PVA glue along the top pieces of the wings and the doors.

    • 15

Paint a top coat of green.

    • 16

Add insignia and any other details you desire.
