How to Build a Miniature Catapult

A catapult is a machine used to throw objects through the air. They were used in the Roman Empire and during the Middle Ages when an army was laying siege to a fortification. The catapult would launch large boulders at the fortifications in an attempt to break down the defenses, allowing the invading army to capture the location. A miniature catapult can be constructed with a rubber band, tape and popsicle sticks.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three popsicle sticks in half.

    • 2

Tape two half sticks to the end of a full stick. Fold over the half sticks and tape the outside ends to another full stick forming a rectangular box. This box is going to be the base for the catapult.

    • 3

Tape the end of a half sticks on the inside of the box at the end of a full stick where it meets the half stick. Go across the half stick to the other full stick and tape another half stick so that they are parallel and sticking upwards like two posts.

    • 4

Place the two remaining half sticks inside of the loop on the rubber band.

    • 5

At the top of the two "posts" tape a half stick between the two uprights. Tape another half stick on the other side. The rubber band now should not be able to be removed from the catapult.

    • 6

Tape a full stick between the top of one post and along the full stick on the base. This will form a diagonal support for the upright. Repeat for the other side.

    • 7

Run tape over the end of a full stick and secure it to the center of the half stick on the base below the uprights. This stick, unlike every other one, should be able to freely move in a 90 degree arc. Apply tape to both sides to make sure it is securely fastened, though still movable. This stick is the throwing arm of the catapult.

    • 8

Loop the rubber band over the throwing arm and tape it in place at the end farthest away from the base. This should keep the throwing arm upwards and prevent it from laying down.

    • 9

Fold the piece of paper into small tray to hold the projectiles. Tape it over the rubber band on the throwing arm.
