Dice Sets
Most sets of RPG dice will include at least seven dice: one four-sided die, one six-sided die, one eight-sided die, two 10-sided dice, one 12-sided die and one 20-sided die.
The Letter "D"
Instructions for rolling dice include the letter "d" surrounded by two numbers. The first number indicates the number of dice to be rolled and the second tells you which die to roll. For example, "2d6" means to roll two six-sided dice.
Percentile Dice
Two 10-sided dice are rolled together to determine a random percentage. One die represents units of 10 and the other represents the digits 0 through 9, so that a roll of 30 and 5 would represent 35 percent.
Creating Characters
Dice are used by a player at the beginning of an RPG to randomly determine the base statistics of the character, such as strength and intelligence.
Performing Actions
Many actions in RPGs have a difficulty or challenge rating. The number of your die roll, added to any bonuses your character has for that action, must meet or exceed the number of the difficulty rating in order for your character to successfully complete the task.
