How to Play a Sorcerer in Dungeons & Dragons

When Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro revamped the old Advanced Dungeons &Dragons system to release Dungeons and Dragons 3.0. One of the things they added was the sorcerer character class. Sorcerers are similar to wizards in that they cast arcane magic. However, unlike a wizard who must prepare a list each day of the spells he wants to cast, a sorcerer can cast any spell he knows at will. Generally, sorcerers know fewer spells but can cast the spells they know more often.

Familiarize yourself thoroughly with the spells available to you. Because a sorcerer can only ever know a limited number of spells, it is important to choose your spells wisely. Some spells, which are useful at very low levels, decrease dramatically in usefulness as you go up in levels and thus are not worth taking.

    • 2

Decide for yourself why your character has developed spontaneous magic. Some races are more prone to developing sorcerers, but they can occur in virtually any race. Choose why it happened to your character and discuss it with your dungeon master as part of your character's background.

    • 3

Place your stats wisely. For a sorcerer, unlike a wizard, the primary stat is charisma. You will obviously want your highest stat here. A high intelligence is also good as it helps determine the number of skill points you receive at each level. Since sorcerers like mages cannot wear armor, it is also a good idea to put a high stat into your dexterity.

    • 4

Examine feats which can make you better at casting spells. Spellcasting prodigy is a first-level feat that is hard to beat when playing a spellcaster. When you have this feat, your primary spellcasting state, in this case charisma, is considered to be two points higher. Meta magic feats are also good, including still spell and silent spell, as they make it easier for your sorcerer to cast regardless of the circumstances.

Talk to your dungeon master about familiars. As a sorcerer, you can summon a familiar at the first level, but there are feats that you can take at higher levels to improve your familiar. You may also want to talk with the dungeon master about appropriate uses of a familiar. Often, a dungeon master will not target a familiar unless the player gets the familiar directly involved in the combat, but this is something you need to know before picking up a pet toad.
