How to Role Play a True Neutral Character in a Dungeons and Dragons Campaign

The alignment system of the pen and paper role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons allows for a wide range of character types. The middle alignment, called True Neutral, is reserved for characters who are committed to maintaining a delicate balance between all of the opposite forces in the universe. To effectively role play a true neutral character you will need to think on a grander scale than the average character.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the big picture in every situation and act according to the larger scheme of things. Aiding your adventuring party in wiping out a clan of orcs may help the nearby village in the short term, but could be detrimental to the area in the long run if it prevents the villagers from learning how to defend themselves against later dangers.

    • 2

Straddle the line between good and evil as often as possible, but branch out when there is too much of an imbalance between the two. Normally your character would be uninterested in taking part in a crusade against demonic creatures in their own realm, but if they have invaded a sizable portion of the Prime Material Plane you should be ready to take up arms against them.

    • 3

Follow the dictates of the law when it is in your best interest to do so, or when the laws do not become so overbearing that people become obsessed with following them to the letter.

    • 4

Break laws and tradition when their mandates threaten to tip the balance of the natural order. If a law puts too much power into the hands of a small group of people, or prevents individuals from protecting nature, ignore it and actively crusade against it.

    • 5

Switch sides between good and evil only when one has too much of a foothold over the other. In general your character should be more supportive of good, as you'd rather be governed by compassionate leaders than tyrannical ones, but if there is no evil to balance the scales, then feel free to work against it until balance is restored.
