How to Role Play a Neutral Good Character in a Dungeons and Dragons Campaign

Every character in the pen-and-paper role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons chooses one of nine alignments to determine their overall behavior and outlook on life. The neutral good alignment is perfect for idealist characters who want to be as good as possible, but don't want to be bothered with ethical considerations of law versus chaos.

Instructions

    • 1

Act as a selfless and benevolent benefactor in every situation, even when it might cost you something or lead you into danger. If your character sees someone else in need, do everything in your power to help them if they are unable to help themselves.

    • 2

Work within the bounds of the law of whatever nation your character is currently in whenever possible. Although a neutral good character has no strong feelings one way or another about laws and breaking them, he should still realize that it is in his best interest to remain on the good side of the local government.

    • 3

Break the law or do things that are borderline chaotic whenever it would serve the greater good. While you may get in trouble for sneaking food into the prison to distribute to the innocent men who are being held against their will, your desire to do good should override any fear of repercussions.

    • 4

Offer to let the other party members take a larger share of the loot or take the first pick of magic items whenever appropriate, but keep in mind any items that you could use more effectively than the other characters and stake your claim to them.

    • 5

Offer forgiveness or leniency to your enemies as long as you can be reasonably sure they won't stab you in the back later or cause more trouble. You should feel no compunctions about destroying a rampaging demon or killing a murderer who is in the act of trying to kill someone, but you might let a kid go free who has been forced into a life of thievery because of his surroundings.

    • 6

Refuse to work with evil characters unless there is a very compelling reason to do so. Unless there are multiple lives at stake or there is a greater danger lurking in the background, the very idea of aiding someone who causes others harm should be completely abhorrent to you.
