Check with your Dungeon Master for any special rules he may have for the game. It isn't uncommon for a Dungeon Master to have several requirements for a game, ranging from ability score generation to class or race choice.
Roll your character's ability scores. You typically do this using three six-sided dice; you roll the dice and add up the scores six times. Then you place these six scores, in order from first to last, in your six ability scores.
Look over your scores and choose a race and class that works well with what you've rolled. If your character has a high Strength and Constitution, then a fighter would be a logical choice; likewise, a high Wisdom and Charisma would lead you towards a Cleric.
Decide on a background for your character. Your statistics, class and race will lead you in a basic direction but you can always expand upon them. Other choices will be easier to make if you choose a back story, hobbies and interests.
Pick out skills or non-weapon proficiencies based on your background. Choose skills that not only work well with your class but with your history to make your character more realistic and easier to play.
