      Read the instruction manual that comes with the game. Elder Scrolls is a complex game to play, so becoming familiar with the rules and operations will enhance your experience. If you purchased a used copy that did not include the manual, you can view a free game guide online (see Resources below).

      Learn the controls for the game. Use the left thumbstick to move your character and the right thumbstick to control where your character looks. Press the "A" button to activate items and the "B" button to read your journal. To jump, press "Y" and to ready your weapon press "X." Attack with the right trigger and block an attack with the left trigger.

      Decide what kind of character you would like to make. Browse through the manual to learn which skills and attributes are available to select from.

      Create your character. Start by choosing the race and sex. Then allocate the points into the skill areas that you would like to enhance.
