How to Restore Coca-Cola Coolers

Coca-Cola memorabilia continues to be in high demand as a retro collectable. There are all kinds of small signs, bottles and keepsakes, but if you're lucky, you can run across a coca-cola picnic cooler. A far cry from today's fiberglass, nylon or plastic coolers, these coolers were made from metal. If it is not completely rusted, you can restore it with some elbow grease, sandpaper and automotive paint. It might not be the cooler to lug to the beach, but it will definitely be more attractive.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush and scrape off any rust from the inside and outside of the cooler with a stiff wire brush.

    • 2

Putty small dents and holes with automotive body filler. Use a putty knife to mash the putty deep into the defects. Wait 24 hours for the filler to dry.

    • 3

Sand off all the paint and filler with a folded piece of 80-grit sandpaper. If you can't get the paint off completely, brush a small amount of chemical stripper to the stubborn areas. Wait 15 minutes and then scrape the paint off with a putty knife. Re-sand with 80-grit sandpaper.

    • 4

Sand the cooler inside and out again with 180-grit sandpaper.

    • 5

Spray the cooler inside and out with a heavy coat of automotive primer. Hold the can 8 inches from the cooler at a 30-degree angle and spray overlapping bands of paint onto the cooler until its completely gray with primer. Wait 4 hours for the primer to dry.

    • 6

Spray the cooler with the Coke signature bright red. Use the same technique for the red paint as you did with the primer. Wait one hour for the paint to dry. Spray it with another coat of red paint.

    • 7

Polish the handles, hinges and steel parts such as corners with steel wool until they shine.

    • 8

If the Coca-Cola letters are raised, use a small brush to delicately paint them white. If there are no raised letters, take the cooler to a sign shop. They can duplicate the Coca-Cola lettering in nylon. You can then stick the letters on in one piece.
