How to Change a Clock's Pendulum Drop

Today, pendulum clocks, such as grandfather clocks and cuckoo clocks, are kept mostly for their decorative, sentimental or antique value. They are not transportable, as any motion will affect the clock's time keeping, which is governed by a swinging pendulum, or weight. The pendulum moves the gears inside the clock that in turn move the hands, showing the time. Based on the pendulum's length, the clock will either have a one-day or eight-day movement.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy a replacement pendulum at a hobby or clock-repair shop. Pendulums are available in 7-inch (1 day) and 8-to-10 inch (8 day) varieties. If possible, find a pendulum that matches the style of your clock.

    • 2

Remove the old pendulum. If your clock has a face that opens, open it. The pendulum will be attached at the bottom of the clock, to a wire loop. Some cuckoo clocks will just have a loop at the base of the clock. Unhook the pendulum from the loop.

    • 3

Attach the new pendulum. Hook the new pendulum to the loop where the old one was attached.

    • 4

Wind the clock. Depending on what kind of pendulum clock you have, this may vary. On most, you will pull the chains that hang down to reset the weights.
