Crackle Paint Process
Crackle spray paint can be used as a finish for projects large and small. Crackle spray paint is a two-step process. Spray crackle paint typically comes in a "kit" that includes two cans of spray paint. The primer is sprayed onto the project surface first and must dry for 24 hours before the next step is initiated. The second can of spray paint is the "crackle" paint. The crackle texture is the result of these two types of paint, which resist one another. As the crackle spray is applied over the primer and begins to dry, it pulls away from the primer in places, creating what appears to be a cracked texture like peeling paint.
Crackle Paint Application
When refinishing a decorative item with crackle paint, the item must be clean and dust free. Like all projects involving spray paint, work should take place in a well ventilated area. The temperature of the work area must be 50 degrees Fahrenheit or greater. When sprayed, these paints will create a fog. Areas that are not being painted should be covered. You may need to apply primer twice, depending on the item and coverage required. When the crackle spray is added in a thin coat, the cracks are smaller and more delicate than a thick coat of spray, which creates a bolder texture.
Ceramic Effect
Once dry, the crackle texture is slightly raised in places. A finishing coat of clear spray paint, gloss or matte, adds a protective layer that makes objects easier to clean. While crackle paint is often used to give a faux wood finish, it also works to imitate the small delicate cracks formed by ceramic glaze as it cools and a finishing coat will help the object retain a surface that feels like ceramic.
Types of Crackle Spray Paint
Crackle spray kits can be purchased in a variety of color combinations from home supply stores and some variety stores. Color combinations from Rust-Oleum Crackle Creations Spray include Venetian White with a dark tan base, Williamsburg Black over a gold base and Barn Red with a tan base. Krylon Paint offers a crackle paint designed for brushing over a primer. You can still apply this type of paint with a paint spraying appliance to reach the same effects achieved with a spray can of paint.
