How to Clean Silver Pennies

If you go metal detecting and find silver pennies, they can be carefully cleaned. It's possible to bring sterling silver to a shine with a little elbow grease and some basic household cleaners. Cleaning coins and removing the natural patina diminishes their value. But if you don't care about the value of the coins, they can be brought to a shine.

  • Cloth
  • Baking soda
  • Toothbrush

      Fill a bowl with water.

      Put the coins into the water and remove any dirt or debris from them with a cloth.

      Remove the coins from the water and dip them in baking soda so as they are completely covered.

      Scrub the coins gently with an old tooth brush. This will remove any tarnishes and bring the coins to a shine without scratching them or damaging their surface.

      Rinse the coins under warm water and towel dry.
