How to Use Oriental Lacquer Finish

Oriental lacquer, made popular in fourth century China and feudal Japan, still maintains a revered presence among woodworking communities and homeowners seeking a creative way to antique their furniture. A delicate and time-consuming technique when prepared by traditional means, a faux-oriental lacquer finish is possible using the proper tools.

Things You'll Need

Black base lacquer
Red or gold lacquer
Roller brush
Cheesecloth
Blending brush

Instructions

  Sand the edges of the wood and wipe it with a clean cloth to make it ready for painting. Leave the object in a cool area for at least one day to allow the wood a chance to expand or contract.

  Paint the object with a generous coat of clear primer. Wait for the primer to dry completely, then paint a thick coat of black lacquer overtop. Spread the paint evenly, adding at least two more coats or until it dries opaque.

  Allow the black coat to dry completely. Dip a fine horsehair brush into red or gold paint, then carefully stroke patterns over the object as desired. Store in a closet when you are finished to allow the lacquer time to dry and set properly.
