How to Overhaul Tractor Motor

That old tractor is not running like it should. It just does not have the power. If you enjoy turning wrenches overhauling it might be for you.

      Bring tractor into clean work space. Remove all tractor trim, hood side panels etc. If you need to log everything in a notebook and make your self notes cause it goes back together just opposite of how it comes apart. Block up front part of tractor under engine. Put a heay duty floor jack under transmission section of tractor. Unhook battery. Remove all wiring that goes to engine.Unhook steering column. Take out bolts holding transmission or clutch housing from engine block and roll back and from engine. Block up to keep stable.

      Remove everything from engine that you have to to pull engine. Make sure you take notes if need be. Remove oil pan. Examine crank and main bearings. If bearings and crank are bad remove engine. Hook engine hoist on it and remove from frame. Take head off. Unhook rods from crankshaft. and remove pistons through top. Tap with a wood block and hammer to remove. Take a sleave puller and remove piston sleaves. Rwmove oil pump. Remove crankshaft. Bring head and crankshaft to a machinist to check and redo if necessary. Buy bearings that machinist says. If they will be different then original. Buy engine kit.

      Clean everything completely. Put new sleaves into block making sure they seat correctly. Put new rings on new pistons. Using a ring compressor put new pistons into sleaves. Put crankshaft back in and new bearings. Make sure all pieces go back where they were. It could be a problem if you mix up rods, bearings or anything else. Torque eerything down to specs as you go. Replace oil pump. Put head on. Now you can start putting everything back opposite it came apart. When put tractor back together where split use a lineup tool to align clutches. Jack rearend up and bring rear into engine. Take your time.
