Things You'll Need
Instructions
Assess the condition of the trunk. If there is canvas covering the outside, check for stains and areas where the material is worn. The canvas can either be cleaned or removed to expose the wood underneath.
Clean the canvas. If the trunk is still in good condition, it can be dry brushed and dabbed with a damp sponge on the problem areas. If the canvas cannot be saved, remove it using a razor and paint scraper.
Sand the exposed slats with the sandpaper. Sand carefully to avoid scratching the metal pieces.
Remove corrosion or rust from the metal pieces of the trunk. If the metal on the trunk is brass, use a piece of fine steel wool to bring back the shine. If the pieces are made from steel or tin, use stronger steel wool or a wire brush until the rust is removed.
Stain the wooden areas of the trunk with a colored stain or clear finish. Once the first coat dries, a second coat may be needed depending on the type of wood the trunk is made out of.
