Instructions
Check that the needle you're using has a sharp point. The needle is held into the tip of the arm with a set screw and can be easily removed and replaced. If the needle is dull, often you can find unused needles in their original packaging in antique stores or order them online. You can also carefully sharpen a used needle, if none others are available. A dull needle will make the record play too slow and also may damage it.
Put the arm in the up position, as shown, not down against the turntable. Set the turntable lever so the turntable won't turn, as you begin cranking. On this model, the lever is on the right hand side of the turntable, and you push it away from you to stop the turntable.
Turn the crank to wind the spring. If the turntable begins spinning, try different positions of the turntable lever to get it to stop. Don't crank too long. You don't want to over-stress the spring, so stop when you start to feel strong resistance. A couple dozen turns may be enough to play a record.
Place a 78 rpm record on the turntable and move the lever to start the turntable turning. Gently swing the arm with the needle down, and rest the needle in the blank margin on the outer edge of the record. Gently touch the arm so the needle slides onto the first groove of the song, and close the lid.
Sit back and listen!
When the record is over, lift the arm again and stop the turntable to change records. When you're done, let the turntable finish spinning until it stops, so you don't store the spring under tension.
