How to Track an Antenna UAV

A UAV is also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle, typically resembling a large white glider. These specialized airplanes are normally monitored by a tracking antenna that uses telemetry, or radio, signals to communicate elevation and global positioning system (GPS) coordinates to the owner on the ground. The constant stream of information can be saved for future movement analysis across a software map or even to locate a lost and fallen UAV. Setting up the antenna and UAV connection is key to successful tracking.

Things You'll Need

  • UAV
  • Tracking antenna system
  • Rx remote control battery pack
  • Remote control transmitter module

Instructions

    • 1

Set the tripod up in an open area, such as a field or meadow. Spread the legs wide so the center of gravity is low to the ground to prevent an accidental blow over.

    • 2

Attach the tracker antenna system to the tripod by threading the tripod's securing screw up into the antenna's base assembly.

    • 3

Plug the remote control transmitter module into the tracker antenna's transmit input socket by pressing it carefully with your hands. Plug the remote control receiver module into the antenna's receiver output socket carefully with your hands.

    • 4

Plug the Rx remote control battery pack wiring into the power socket on the antenna by pushing with your hands. Turn the antenna on by pressing the power switch.

    • 5

Enter the "Setup" display by pressing the menu button on the antenna.

    • 6

Place the UAV beside the antenna. Set the base position by activating the home or base setup function on the antenna's front display. Each manufacturer will have a different title sequence for accessing the setup menu.

    • 7

Calibrate the antenna's bearing by entering the "Calibration Mode" in the setup menu. The antenna should move and point in a particular direction. Walk the UAV about 30 feet in the direction of the pointing antenna. Place the UAV on the ground.

    • 8

Return to the antenna and press the "Calibrate" or "Store" button. The UAV and tracker antenna should have adequate positioning communication with these two set points.

    • 9

Fly the UAV and observe the tracker antenna. The antenna should follow the UAV constantly if the setup is correct.
