How to Make a Triple-Winged Paper Airplane

Paper airplanes require wings to fly, because it̵7;s the air pressure pushing up on them that provides the lifting force. A triple-winged airplane may have an unusual design, but it utilizes air pressure as effectively as its more common two-winged siblings. Make your own triple-winged paper airplane that will fly as readily as any two-winged version. Household supplies will be needed but no special equipment.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • 3 sheets construction paper, 8 by 10 inches
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Utility knife
  • White glue
  • Modeling clay

Instructions

    • 1

Place a sheet of newspaper on a table. Place the sheet of construction paper horizontally on the newspaper. Draw an 8-inch-long horizontal line on the paper with the ruler and pencil. Measure 12 inches up from each end of the line. Make a dot on the paper at the 8-inch marks with the pencil.

    • 2

Draw a horizontal line to connect the two marks on the paper. Make a dot on the line at the halfway mark.

    • 3

Measure 12 inches out from the halfway mark and make an X on the line. Draw a line from the X at your left to the end of the horizontal line closest to you on the left side. Draw a line from the X at your right to the end of the horizontal line closest to you on the right side.

    • 4

Cut through the outline of the triangle you have drawn with the ruler and a utility knife. Place the triangle on the newspaper vertically with the longest end facing you. Fold the left bottom corner over to the right bottom corner. Smooth the crease down. Unfold the triangle. Make two more cut rectangles in the same manner.

    • 5

Place the three triangles vertically on the newspaper in the following manner: the one to your left with the longest end of the triangle facing you; the one next to the one to the left with the longest end farthest from you; and the one to your right with the longest end closest to you.

    • 6

Measure up 4 inches from the base of the triangle at the center. Move the ends of the two rectangles at either side down until they are even with the 4-inch mark. Fold each of the rectangles along the creases that were made earlier.

    • 7

Apply white glue along the sides of the center triangle. Place the two outer triangles against the sides of the center triangle. Hold the triangles against each other for two minutes so the glue can take hold. Let the glue set for 10 minutes.

    • 8

Apply a dab of modeling clay to the tip of the triangle that is between the other two triangles. Hold the airplane you have made by the end that has the two tips. Flick your wrist forward as you release the airplane to send it soaring.
