How to Fly the Aeromax Red Rascal

The Aeromax Red Rascal is a large, training aircraft meant to introduce model pilots to the hobby of scale aviation. Its size and simple controls afford it reasonably good maneuverability, while its low price in relation to other models makes it easily replaceable and repairable should your first efforts in the air result in little more than spectacular crashes. Operating a Red Rascal is the same as operating other model aircraft, but it is more forgiving for beginners.

Things You'll Need

  • Model engine electric starter
  • Glow fuel
  • Remote controller

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the Red Rascal's fuel tank with glow fuel. Prime the fuel into the engine.

    • 2

Switch on the airplane and controller electronics. Move the control sticks on the remote controller to test for correct action. The left control stick typically controls the engine speed; the right control stick typically controls the direction and movement of the airplane. Consult the instruction manual to determine the functions of the radio.

    • 3

Insert the rotating end of the electric starter over the nut at the end of the Red Rascal's propeller and press the button to start the engine. This may take a few moments. Pull the starter away immediately when the engine starts and begins to idle.

    • 4

Hold the tail fin of the Red Rascal and test the controller's speed-control function. Idle the engine for at least four to five minutes to allow it to warm up.

    • 5

Place the airplane at the end of a long runway such as a well-manicured field, empty parking lot or other open area. Ensure there is at least 50 yards of space to maneuver the airplane while it is in the air.

    • 6

Push the throttle control forward to increase the speed of the plane. As it builds speed, you will see the tail of the airplane lift off the ground. When this happens, pull the right control stick straight back, about halfway. This will allow the Red Rascal to lift off the ground.

    • 7

Pull the right control stick back to initiate a climb. Move the right stick to the left or right to control the flight path of the plane. Keep the plane about 30 feet off the ground and circle the runway until you become acclimated to the controls. Progress to more elaborate maneuvers as you become comfortable controlling the Red Rascal.

    • 8

Land the Red Rascal by reducing the speed of the engine as you line the plane up over the runway. Gradually reduce the speed until the front landing gear touches the ground. Kill the power to the engine to slow the plane enough for its tail to touch down.
