How to Attach a Plane's Canopy With Magnets

Flying model airplanes is a hobby enjoyed by many. Unfortunately there is a lot of downtime as pilots perform necessary maintenance checks, replace batteries and make internal adjustments to their models. One way to speed up this process and get back in the air faster is to provide better access the internal workings of your model by using magnets for the canopy -- which usually doubles as the model access hatch. Magnets will hold the canopy on securely during flight but allow for easy access once your plane is on the ground.

Things You'll Need

  • Assembled model airplane
  • Four neodymium magnets
  • 4 small nails
  • Q-Tip
  • Clear epoxy

Instructions

    • 1

Clear a workspace and set the assembled model in front of you.

    • 2

Remove the model's canopy/access hatch. Use the Q-Tip to wipe away any dirt around the edges of the fuselage and the canopy.

    • 3

Use the epoxy to glue four magnets to the bottom of the canopy. Set the canopy aside to allow the epoxy to dry.

    • 4

Align the canopy and set it in place to mark where the magnets contact the fuselage. Use the marks as a guide for inserting the nails into the fuselage. Depending on the material of the plane, you may want to use a small drop of epoxy on the tip of each nail to help hold it in place. Once the nails are set, the project is complete. The magnets will hold the canopy in place when they come in contact with the nail heads.
