How to Set Up Dual Rudder Servos

Large-scale aerobatic, radio-controlled airplanes need servos with a lot of torque to move their control surfaces. Often, this torque cannot be found in a single servo, and two servos must be used together. There are two setup options for dual-rudder servos. One has two servos driving one set of pushrods; the other has a servo attached to each side of the rudder.

Things You'll Need

  • "Y" cable
  • Pushrods
  • Control horns

Instructions

  1. One on Each Side Installation

    • 1

Mount a rudder servo on the left and right sides of the fuselage. The servos should be placed the same distance from the rudder. The servos need to move in the opposite direction from each other to work properly. Power on your transmitter and receiver, move the rudder control stick back and forth to test this.

    • 2

Install control horns on each side of the rudder. Use the same mounting holes so that the horns are in the same place on the rudder.

    • 3

Attach a pushrod from one servo to the control horn. Center the rudder and adjust the pushrod length until the rudder is in line with the tail.

    • 4

Connect the two servos with a "Y" cable and plug the cable into channel four on the receiver. Power on the transmitter and then the receiver. Allow the servos to find their center positions.

    • 5

Adjust the connected pushrod so that the rudder is centered. Connect the other pushrod.

    Two Servos in Tandem Installation

    • 6

Mount the two servos in a servo tray inside the fuselage. The servos must be placed side by side, or in-line one in front of the other; they can not be offset.

    • 7

Attach pushrods from one servo arm to the other, one per side. Use a "Y" cable to connect the two servos together and plug the cable into channel four of the receiver. Power on the transmitter and receiver and work the rudder control stick. Make sure the servos move freely.

    • 8

Attach the pushrods from the rudder to the aft servo, the one closest to the tail section, and adjust to center the rudder.
