What Is an AFT Position While Flying?

Many aviation words have their roots in naval terminology. In the early days of aviation, flying machines were termed "craft" or "aircraft." Included in the terminology is the designation for directions. "Fore," or "bow," designates the forward part of the craft, "port" is the left side of the vessel facing forward toward, "starboard" is the right side and "aft" designates the rear of the ship or plane.
  1. Aft Location

    • Aft refers directly to the tail portion of the plane past the vessel's center. When referring to the "aft section," pilots are indicating the section of the plane past the center, reaching to the tip of the tail.

    Aft Position While Personally Flying

    • When you are flying on an airplane and you personally are located in the aft position, you are located in the seating section in the rear of the plane.

    Aft Position of Throttles

    • When the throttle is positioned "aft," the throttle is backed as far toward the tail of the plan as the mechanics allow. Generally, this indicates zero throttle or zero forward momentum applied by the plane's engines.

Aft Positioning of Ailerons and Blades

    • Ailerons, or flaps of an airplane, and blades, either on a helicopter or referring to the pitch of a prop blade, can be placed in an "aft flying position." The aft position refers to the maximum extension allowed by the blade or flap. When placed fully aft, ailerons provide the maximum possible drag and lift by extending downward and backward. Blade positioning at the maximum downward and backward position allows an increase of thrust or control by the pilot. The actual results of aft positioning depend on the aircraft.
