How to Make a Balloon Rocket Go Down & Back to You

A rocket "pushes" against gravity using expanding gases coming out from a nozzle at its bottom. You can make a balloon rocket that will go up and then return to the ground in your immediate area. You will need supplies from a party store, hardware store and from around the house.

Things You'll Need

  • Toilet paper tube
  • Party balloon
  • Masking tape
  • 2 metal washers

Instructions

    • 1

Stand the toilet paper tube on a table. Stretch the neck of the party balloon open. Place the neck over the open end of the tube. Tape the neck to the tube with strips of masking tape.

    • 2

Tape a metal washer to each side of the tube, over the neck of the balloon, with a strip of masking tape.

    • 3

Hold the open end of the tube against your mouth. Blow into the end to inflate the balloon. Stop blowing when the balloon is fully inflated.

    • 4

Remove your mouth from the end of the tube and place your palm over the end to keep the air from escaping.

    • 5

Go outside in your backyard. Place the tube on the ground. Release the tube so that the rocket you have made can take off. Collect your rocket when it returns to the earth and repeat the inflation process if you want to send it flying again.
