How to Calculate Pivotal Altitude

In aviation terminology, "pivotal altitude" refers to an altitude which, at a certain speed, allows pilots to see an object on the ground as stationary, regardless of the aircraft's distance from the object. Once you have the speed of the aircraft, you can calculate the pivotal altitude with a simple formula.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain the speed (in knots) of the aircraft.

    • 2

Multiply the speed of the aircraft by itself. This new number will be referred to as "v."

    • 3

Divide v by 11.3 to find the pivotal altitude of the aircraft.
