Canoe Types and Cost
Canoes break down into four primary categories: recreational, racing, solo and tandem. Within those four areas, you can have any combination. For example, you can purchase solo recreational canoes and tandem racing canoes. Each type of canoe will be made out of a different material and have different dimensions, which will dictate how it will need to be stored. As of July 2011, an high-end tandem recreational canoes cost around $1,500 while a high-end racing canoe cost as much as $3,500.
Lift
One of the benefits of purchasing a high-end canoe is the weight. The material and construction of a those canoes make them light, which is helpful when you need to transport it or store it. For around $20 you can purchase lift: a pulley system that attaches to the ceiling of your garage or other storage area. It has two straps that wrap around the front and the rear of the boat and with one or two pulls you can lift the canoe toward the ceiling and lock it into place.
Shed
If your garage is cluttered, or you want to keep your canoe away from your cars, look into is a storage shed. Hardware suppliers carry storage sheds that can be constructed right in your backyard. The price of the shed can run up to $2,500 depending on the materials you choose and the size of the shed. Also take into consideration the size of your craft. Before you invest in a shed make sure your boat will fit. If the shed is large enough, you can use a lift inside of your shed to save extra space.
Cover
If you have a dedicated storage space in your home another affordable option is a canoe cover. For around $50 you can purchase a canoe cover made from water resistant material. The cover will prevent mildew from forming and keep your canoe protected from UV light while it's stored. Many covers are designed with easy-access openings and incorporate handles for transpiration. These covers will provide the protection your canoe needs while it is not in use.
