Specifications for a Short Skyvan Airplane

Short Brothers, also known as Shorts, was established in 1901 and worked with the Wright brothers to become the first company to receive a contract for airplane production. The Shorts Skyvan airplane was designed and manufactured in the latter half of the 20th century and is still in use for cargo and parachuting operations.
  1. Performance

    • Shorts Skyvan airplanes have a cruise speed that ranges between 178 and 195 mph, consuming 600 lbs. of fuel per hour. When loaded to the maximum of its capabilities, this plane requires 1,800 feet of runway for takeoff and 1,400 feet of runway for landing. Fully loaded, the plane climbs at a rate of 1,500 feet per minute. (see references 1) In addition to cargo carrying operations, the Skyvan is also suited for military and recreational parachute operations with the ability to bring 18 or more people to an altitude of 13,000 feet in ten minutes.     Equipment

    • The Shorts Skyvan features a Twin TPE-331-201A Super power plant that produces 715 hp per engine, flat rated from 950 hp. The frame of this plane has a deicing system. This airplane utilizes IFR avionics with a dual GPS moving map system. For communications, this model has two VHF and one FM radio systems as well as a satellite phone. The Skyvan fits nine single or tandem seats and has 36 inch tires. (see references 3) In addition to regular cargo, the Skyvan can transport up to 607 gallons of fuel by using a bulk fuel transport system. (see references 4)

    Payload Management

    • A Shorts Skyvan airplane has an overall cabin volume of 800 cubic feet. This plane has a maximum payload of 4,600 lb. and is able to tie down 4,000 lb. of cargo at recessed floor attachment points. Depending on the location in the cabin, the floor of this model holds a maximum of 200 lb. to 1,000 lb. per square foot. The airplane is equipped with rollers, ramps, cargo straps and a winch to make loading, securing and unloading cargo safer and easier.

    Dimensions

    • The Shorts Skyvan airplane has a cabin that's 6 feet 6 inches in height. The cabin's maximum width is 6 feet, 6 inches. The width is 6 feet 2 inches at the center of the cabin. With the rear door closed, the length of the cabin is 18 feet 7 inches, and the maximum load length with the rear door open is 25 feet. The rear door has a width of 6 feet 6 inches and a height of 5 feet 9 inches. With the rear door removed, the height of the back entrance is 6 feet 6 inches.
