Lipo Battery Charging Tips

Lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries are the latest type of rechargeable battery. They are often chosen by remote control enthusiasts to power their remote control models, as they are lightweight and produce 3.7 volts and up to about 2,400 milliamps; this compares to 1.2 volts and about 800 milliamps respectively for a nickel rechargeable battery. However, they can be volatile, so they need to be charged with care.
  1. LiPo Charger

    • It's imperative you use a specifically made LiPo charger to charge your batteries. Never use a charger designed for other types of rechargeable battery; the charge rate will be wrong and there's no safety cutoff, which all LiPo chargers have to stop overcharging. Overcharging a LiPo battery can result in the battery catching fire; there are reports of batteries exploding.

    Charge Rate

    • Always ensure that your charger is set to the same voltage as your LiPo battery. LiPo batteries are commonly used in battery packs, so many chargers have a variable charge setting so you can charge different packs. Check the label on the battery or battery pack to find out the output voltage. Set the charger to the same voltage; a little lower doesn't cause a problem, but a higher voltage damages the battery and may be dangerous as detailed in Section 1.

    Excessive Discharge

    • LiPo batteries can be recharged at any point during discharge with no ill effects or damage occurring. However, if you attempt to completely discharge your battery and succeed--which is unlikely, as LiPo manufacturers have built in a safety device to prevent this happening--it will not recharge. This is because a total discharge destroys the chemical base of the battery, rendering it useless.

    LiPo Charging Bag

    • Always place your batteries in a charging bag while they are on charge. The bag is fire- and explosion-proof, so if a problem does occur while your batteries are charging, you are safe. They are fairly inexpensive and widely available from electrical and hobby stores. Never leave LiPo batteries that are charging unattended. Always turn off the charger once the batteries are charged and allow them to cool inside the bag before removing them.
