Hummel Bird Airplane Specs

The Hummel Bird is a homebuilt, one-seat, single-engine airplane designed by Morry Hummel. Hummel Aviation has sold plan packages for the aircraft since 1982. Despite its diminutive size and modest power, the Bird is classified as an Experimental, not an Ultralight. Its weight, fuel capacity and top speed exceed the ultralight category specifications. Rated for 6.6 Gs of stress, the airframe of a Hummel Bird is rugged and resilient.
  1. Wingspan and Weight

    • The wingspan of the Hummel Bird is 18 feet and the total wing surface area is 57.2 feet. The total length of the Bird is 13 feet 4 inches. Its empty weight is 300 pounds and its gross weight is 530 pounds.

    Speeds, Takeoff and Landing

    • The Bird cruises at 110 to 115 miles per hour. Its stall speed is 38 miles per hour and the VNE ("Never Exceed") speed is 145 mph. The minimum takeoff distance for a Bird is 300 feet and the distance to take off over a 50-foot obstacle is 1,000 feet. The Bird has a landing roll of 800 feet.

    Power

    • The Bird is all-aluminum and powered by a standard four-cylinder Volkswagen engine sawed in half so that only two cylinders are present. A Volkswagen Type 1 engine produces 30 to 40 horsepower depending on the year model of Volkswagen from which the engine is salvaged. The capacity of the fuel tank is 6 gallons.

    Cost to Build

    • A Bird can be constructed with simple hand tools. Estimates of build cost for an amateur are slightly more than $2,000, not including one-half of a Volkswagen engine. Hummel Aviation recommends the Bird for first-time builders.
