Rutan Long EZ Specifications

The Rutan Long-EZ is a homebuilt aircraft designed by Burt Rutan and constructed of lightweight composite materials. It was introduced in kit form in 1979 by Rutan Aircraft Factory of Mojave, California. The Long-EZ had a pusher-prop canard configuration, placing the smaller horizontal elevator in front of the main wing rather than behind it as in a conventional design, and the engine and propeller on the rear of the plane instead of the front. A two-seat recreational craft, the Long-EZ was designed to be a longer range and more powerful version of its predecessor, the Rutan VariEze.
  1. Power

    • The Long-EZ is powered by a 115 horsepower, horizontally opposed four cylinder Lycoming O-235 engine.

    Performance

    • The cruise speed of the Long-EZ is 186 miles per hour and the maximum speed is 193 miles per hour. Rate of climb solo is 1750 feet per minute. Solo service ceiling is 27,000 feet. The ground roll for takeoff is 950 feet and the landing ground roll is 680 feet.

    Fuel

    • The Long-EZ's fuel capacity is 52 gallons. It has a range of 1150 miles with a 40-minute reserve.

    Landing Gear

    • The Long-EZ has a retractable nose wheel and a fixed main gear. While parked, the nosegear is retracted and the nose rests on the ground to prevent tipping backwards due to the aft center of gravity from the rear-mounted engine.
