How to Use a Pitch Gauge

A pitch gauge, commonly known as a screw or thread pitch gauge, is used to measure the pitch of the thread on a bolt or screw. They come in handy when you need to determine the correct nut to fit onto a specific bolt. The correct pitch of the nut is important to avoid damaging the threads on a bolt with an incorrectly sized nut. With a bit of trial and error, a pitch gauge helps you determine the correct nut.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the pitch gauge in your right hand and open the selection of gauges by rotating them out from the center to the outside of the gauge.

    • 2

Select the gauge at the start of the group and fold the rest back slightly.

    • 3

Hold the bolt or screw in your left hand and set the gauge's teeth onto the threads, aligning the two.

    • 4

Look closely to see if the gauge's teeth perfectly align with the threads. If they do not, slide the gauge back and move the next one forward. Check the threads in the same manner and repeat this process until you find the gauge that matches the threads.

    • 5

Record the number on the gauge that matches the threads for your bolt. Take this to a hardware or bolt supplier to purchase the correct nut for your application.
