How to Set Up a Giant Scale RC Airplane

Giant-scale radio controlled aircraft should follow a preflight check-off procedure just like the full-size aircraft they are designed to imitate. A giant-scale RC airplane is typically in 1/4 to 1/3 scale to the original airplane. The preflight check ensures the aircraft's systems are functioning, the fuel has been topped off and the aircraft is on the takeoff strip facing the winds.

Things You'll Need

  • Preflight procedure checklist
  • Aircraft wrenches
  • Screwdrivers
  • Fuel sump

Instructions

    • 1

Set the aircraft up on the tarmac at your flying field or club area. Before turning on your frequency control box, check with the field's club or posted rules to make sure the frequency you are on is approved for the field's use. Common frequencies include 72 MHz. Turn on the control box and frequency. Turn on the aircraft's receiver.

    • 2

Insert the fuel sump needle into the fuel valve either under the wing or cowling. Let about 1/2 inch of fuel enter the sump, hold it up to the light and look for sediment or water. If present, drain the tanks and pour in fresh fuel.

    • 3

Check all screws and bolts and tighten them if loose. Push the landing gear wheels to make sure they are rotating properly. With your hands, move the rudders on the tail, and the flaps on the wings.

    • 4

Push the rudder and flaps controls on the control box and watch the corresponding mechanisms on the aircraft move as they are supposed to.

    • 5

Check your radio range through collapsing the control box antenna, handing the transmitter box to a friend and having them walk away from the aircraft. Have the friend run through the controls on the box while you stand next to the aircraft watching the mechanisms work as they are engaged on the transmitter-control box. Make sure the friend is at least 100 feet away. If the controls work, the giant scale RC aircraft is now set up and ready to fly.
