Smyth Sidewinder Specifications

The Smyth Sidewinder is a plane designed to be built from plans which won the 1969 Outstanding Design award at the 17th Sport Aviation Convention in Rockford, Ill. When built according to specifications, the Sidewinder is an all-metal aircraft capable of performing all basic aerobatic maneuvers. The Sidewinder is stressed to an ultimate of nine times the force of gravity.

    • The Smyth Sidewinder has a wingspan of 24 feet 10 inches. The total wing area is 96 square feet. The Sidewinder has a fuel capacity of 17.5 gallons. Baggage weight is 60 lbs. The gross weight is 1,450 lbs. The Sidewinder has an empty weight of 867 lbs. and a useful load of 583 lbs. The total length of the aircraft is 19 feet 4 inches. The cabin of the Sidewinder is approximately 34 to 36 inches wide, depending on the measuring point.

    Performance

    • The Smyth Sidewinder plans are written to accommodate 90 to 180 horsepower engines. The performance of the aircraft will vary depending on the engine chosen. With a 125 hp motor, the maximum speed would be 175 mph. The cruise speed of the Smythe Sidewinder would be 160 mph. Stall speed without a flap is 55 mph. The rate of climb ranges from 900 to 1,500 feet per minute.
