How to Select an Optimum Propeller

Matching a propeller of the proper size to the engine of your RC airplane requires knowing your engine's rpm (rotations per minute) rating and size. Using an optimal propeller, your RC aircraft will operate at its most efficient- and performance-oriented level. When the propeller spins, it allows the airplane to move forward and break out of ground effect, thus bringing the airplane into the air. While in flight, the propeller gives the airplane thrust to maintain altitude.

Instructions

    • 1

Direct an Internet browser to an optimal propeller calculator (see Resources). Input your airplane's engine data. Type in the engine size and rpm rating. Hit "Enter." For example, if the engine is a 180-horsepower model, enter "180" in the "hp" section. If the rpm is rated at 5,000, enter "5,000" in the appropriate field.

Note the recommended optimal propeller size for your RC airplane.

    • 3

Select a proper-sized propeller either at a hobby shop or through an online RC airplane retailer. Install the propeller following manufacturer instructions. Take your aircraft out flying and feel how the aircraft reacts with the new propeller.
