How do I Use an Angle of Attack Gauge?

The angle of attack gauge is used in aircraft to determine the correct climb-out and approach speeds. It measures the angle of the wing versus the direction of the wind striking the leading edge of the wing. This tells the pilot whether to increase or decrease his airspeed when taking off or landing, regardless of the aircraft's weight. The angle of attack gauge warns the pilot when they are in danger of stalling the aircraft and is more accurate than the airspeed gauge when determining the correct angle of attack and speed for a flight maneuver.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the angle of attack gauge in your aircraft. The angle of attack gauge is located in your instrument cluster and is marked with red, green, and yellow zones.

    • 2

Increase your airspeed when taking-off if the angle of attack gauge is reading in the yellow or red areas. If the angle of attack is in the green area, then the speed of the aircraft is sufficient for take-off.

    • 3

Slow your aircraft while checking the angle of attack gauge when approaching for landing. By monitoring the angle of attack gauge, you can control your airspeed for the approach without stalling the aircraft.

    • 4

Monitor the angle of attack gauge while banking to avoid stalling the aircraft. If the angle of attack gauge goes into the yellow or red area, increase the throttle to avoid stalling.
