How to Size an RC Electric Aircraft Brushless Motor

Radio controlled aircraft are available in styles such as propeller or small jet planes. Motors for these aircraft are either fuel powered or battery-electric. A brushless RC motor is a battery-electric powered rig that uses mo metal "brushes" around the magnetic core. The benefits of these engines include less wearing out of the interior of the motor and not having to clean out the motor as regularly. Sizing the RC brushless engine is much the same as the brushed engines -- it needs to be done according to the recommended engine size for your RC airplane.

Things You'll Need

  • RC Airplane scale size
  • RC airplane recommended engine size

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the engine size for your current RC airplane kit. This information is found either on the brushed motor in the airplane -- by the engine vents -- or on the kit manual. Motors are measured in volts. For example, a kit may have a recommended 1100KV rating.

    • 2

Select a brushless motor that is within the recommended size for your aircraft. If you need to modify the engine size, go a bit smaller versus larger as the larger engine may affect the center of gravity on the airplane.

    • 3

Inspect the brushless motor and look for the etched markings indicating the motor size, in volts. It will likely be located along the inner cylinder at the propeller spline.
