How to Use My Own Transmitter for a Simulator

Using your own transmitter as the controller for a flight simulator is only possible if the simulator software supports your particular transmitter. Also, your transmitter must have a training connector. If you don't have a connector on the back of your transmitter then it cannot be used as a controller. Assuming that you have a compatable transmitter and a trainer connection, you should be able to use your transmitter as a control for the simulator.

Instructions

    • 1

Find your transmitter's manufaturer and model number. Compare this to the supported transmitters in the documentation of the simulator's software. If your transmitter is supported you will need to purchase a USB trasmitter cable adapter.

    • 2

Search on the internet for the USB adapter that fits your brand and model of transmitter. Once you purchase and recieve your USB adapter you may need to install some software that came with the cable for it to be recognized as a game controller. Some newer adapters don't require software to be installed.

    • 3

Install the adapter's jack into your transmitter and insert the USB end into your computer's USB port. Read the documentation for your adapter and simulator software to determine if you need to leave the transmitter in the off position. Some adapters use the USB port to power the transmitter, without the power switch on, saving your transmitter's batteries.

Click Start on your Windows desktop and go to Settings then Control panel, open Game Controllers. Check to see if your transmitter is listed as a recognized game controller. If it's listed you can calibrate your controls here. If you don't see your controller, you need to install the software that came with your transmitter's adapter cable. Once your software is installed, return to Control Panel and Game Controllers and calibrate your transmitter.

When you launch your flight sim the first time you may need to set up your transmitter as a controller in the game's controller settings area. Some flight simulators will automatically recognize the controller and no setup is needed in the game. Check your simulator software's documentation for more specific information on using a transmitter with their software.
