Instructions to Make RC Planes

Aviation dreams often start on the ground with radio controlled (RC) aircraft. Model planes are built to scale with working engines, ailerons, tail section and wings. A control box broadcasts the control signal to the craft when it is in the air or on the runway. Small planes at 1/32 scale all the way up to 1/2 or 1/4 scale keep the hobbyist "in the air." Begin RC plane building with an entry level model to learn the basic process.

Things You'll Need

  • Magnifying glass light
  • Small brushes
  • Toothpicks
  • Epoxy

Instructions

  1. Aircraft Model

    • 1

Set up your work table and area. It is important to keep the area in a wind or chaos-free zone; keep pets and young children away from the hobby zone. Set out the fuselage of the RC aircraft.

    • 2

Construct the wings away from the fuselage and prepare them for attachment to the fuselage. Wings may be tiered or single layered. Trim off any plastic knobs from the model as you work on the wings. Use the scalpel or utility knife to cut the pieces from the model piece case. For intricate glue work, dip a toothpick into the glue and apply. For larger areas, use a brush.

    • 3

Assemble the tail and rudders. Like the wings, assemble the tail pieces off from the main aircraft body.

    • 4

Attach the wings and tail assembly to the fuselage. Let glue dry completely.

    • 5

Turn the aircraft upside down and attach the landing gear.

    Engine and Radio Controls

    • 6

Place the engine into the engine housing at the front of the aircraft. Test the engine prior to use by filling the carburetor with RC plane fuel. Keep the engine on the work stand and fire it up to test. Attach the propeller to the aircraft and check the engine and prop attachment by turning the engine on and letting the prop spin at the lowest idle possible.

    • 7

Consult the RC aircraft manual to locate the area where the RC receiver is to be placed. Attach the RC receiver -- the radio that picks up the signals and triggers the flight controls -- to the aircraft.

    • 8

Test the radio receiver by turning it on along with the control box. Push all gear controls and watch the rudders, ailerons and landing gear move as directed.

    • 9

Paint the aircraft to your desired scheme.
