How to Make Strong Repelling Magnets

Magnets have a positive end and a negative end similar to batteries. Holding the positive end of a magnet to the positive end of another magnet produces a strong repelling force. The magnets do not want to touch each other. The key to making strong repelling magnets is to make two magnets that are identical to each other in material and electric charge. A propane tank and a nickel metal bar along with a barbecue grill to start the process.

Things You'll Need

  • Lighter fluid
  • Matches
  • Charcoal
  • Barbecue grill

Instructions

  1. Build your own permanent magnet

    • 1

Put charcoal inside barbecue grill. Add lighter fluid and light with a match.

    • 2

Place nickel metal bar inside barbecue grill and let heat for 3 to 4 minutes.

    • 3

Keep metal bar on the grill and turn propane torch on. Apply flame to the nickel metal bar and run torch over nickel metal bar back and forth evenly for 3 to 4 minutes.

    • 4

Turn off the torch and the barbecue grill. Use tongs to take metal bar out of heat and lay aside.

    • 5

Brush hot metal bar with the neodymium magnet. Run the magnet in one direction top to bottom down the metal bar. Stroke metal bar in the same direction using the same edge of the magnet.

    • 6

Let metal bar cool and it become a permanent strong magnet.

    • 7

Repeat steps 1-6 for a second identical nickel metal bar. The finished product will be two identical metal bars that are now magnets.

    • 8

Try and touch the positive pole of one bar to the positive pole of the other bar and watch them repel each other.
