Western Pennsylvania Flight Schools

Ever since the Wright Brothers got the first airplane off the ground, people have been fascinated with air travel. There are flight schools at airports all over the world, teaching people how to fly planes for commercial airlines, or just for their own, private use. Western Pennsylvania is no exception, with flight schools based at large and small airports around the region.
  1. Allegheny County

    • Pittsburgh Flight Training Center, based at the Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin, provides Part 141 flight instruction in association with the Community College of Allegheny County. Students can earn an associate of science degree in Aviation Technology. Those enrolled in the CCAC program take part in ground school classes at the South Campus, then apply their classroom knowledge to courses at the flight training center. The school also offers 30-minute discovery flights.

    Beaver County

    • Aviation Certification and Education Solutions, Inc., based at the Beaver County Airport in Beaver Falls, just north of Pittsburgh, provides flight training and aviation services to students attending the Community College of Beaver County's aviation sciences program. The school offers private, commercial, and recreational flight training using Diamond DA 20 and DA 40 aircraft. In addition, this flight school trains students interested in careers in military aviation.

    Butler County

    • Located at the North Pittsburgh-Butler County Airport in Butler, AirQuest Aviation offers private and commercial pilot programs as well as Cirrus Transition Training. Students are instructed in the fundamentals of flying, along with meteorology, navigation, and other flight-related basics such as aircraft performance. To earn flight certification, the students must pass three exams: written and oral tests, and then a practical demonstration of their abilities.

    Indiana County

    • Flight Training Indiana PA and Lease Aviation are associated flight schools based at the Indiana County/Jimmy Stewart Airport in the city of Indiana. Both schools offer certificate programs under certified Federal Aviation Administration instructors Julian Simpson and George Bieger. Private and recreational pilot certifications and instrument rating are available. Instructors can also take students on discovery flights or arrange for aerial photography sessions. The schools use Piper aircraft equipped with Garmin 430 GPS units.

    Westmoreland County

    • Based at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, Westmoreland Aviation in Latrobe offers ground school courses in conjunction with Westmoreland County Community College. The school uses the Jeppesen ground and flight curriculum and features two Piper aircrafts and a Beechcraft airplane, all equipped with Garmin GPS systems. Westmoreland Aviation can help you obtain both private and commercial pilot licenses and offers discovery flights, scenic flights, and aerial photography.
