How to Convert a Super Cub to a Brushless Motor

Based on a full-size trainer aircraft, the Parkzone Supercub is intended for beginner RC airplane modelers. It brings together a low start up cost, large lightweight design, and minimalist three-channel controls; which all contribute to its reputation as an easy-to-fly and forgiving aircraft. Part of the appeal is the ability to fly the Supercub without any prior experience or instructor. Simply wait for a suitable day with winds of no more than 7 mph, and head out to your local field. The Supercub comes with absolutely everything needed to get flying in just a few minutes. Once comfortable with the model's flying characteristics you may choose the very popular brushless motor upgrade modification. This will endow the Supercub with more power and allow it to fly within a greater wind envelope.

Things You'll Need

Parkzone Trojan speed control
Park 480 brushless motor
Trojan motor mount
2 Parkzone pkz1061 servos (3-wire)
AR 6100 or similar micro receiver
DSM2 transmitter (DX5 or DX6i)
1,800 to 2,200 mAh lithium polymer battery
Drill
Assorted screws/washers
Bind plug

Instructions

  Remove the factory three in one ESC/Receiver unit, propeller, cowling, gear box and motor.

  Attach the Trojan motor mount to the firewall, two new holes will need to be drilled on the Supercub nose for proper alignment of the new mount.

  Connect the brushless motor to the mount with four screws.

  Attach the right side of the mount to the fuselage using a washer on each screw. On the left side, place a washer between the nose and the motor mount, and tighten down both sides to achieve the desired down thrust angle.

  Install the 25-amp speed control, DSM2 receiver, and screw down the new servos in place of the old.

  Enlarge the stock Supercub cowling to allow passage of the Park 480 motor.

  Attach the stock 9.5-by-7.5 propeller. A three-bladed unit may also be used for added power and a unique look.

  Bind the Supercub to your transmitter using a bind plug. Verify all control surfaces are moving in the correct direction, and that throttle response is smooth and linear.
