Aircraft Hydraulic Pipe Identification

Modern aircraft have hundreds of hydraulic pipes, lines and other components that actuate movable surfaces. The hydraulic fluid that fills this plumbing is a hazardous material and must be kept pressurized, so proper pipe identification is crucial to aircraft safety.
  1. Colors

    • Hydraulic pipes and plumbing are identified by a color coded tag affixed to the tube itself. The tags are half blue and half yellow or half green and half yellow.

    Tag Type

    • The tags used for identification are manufactured with different materials depending on operating environment. General purpose tags are 1-inch tape or stickers circling the tube, metal tags may be used in hot or oily areas and special painted-on tags are used in areas where tag loss is likely.

    Flexible Piping

    • In flexible tubing where standard 1-inch tags are not practical, stamped or printed plastic may be used. They are identified by the plain-language hydraulic fluid type occupying the hose or the specification code used in its manufacture.
