How to Recharge an Aircraft Battery

Aircraft batteries are very similar to regular automotive batteries. They come in standard voltages of 12 volts or 24 volts, which is totally dependent on the type of electrical system installed. They also have standard automotive battery posts, which will accommodate battery charger attachment clips. In every case, charging an aircraft battery is exactly like charging an automotive battery. The only real difference is that the voltages may be different.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the battery charger.

    • 2

Attach a jumper cable to the negative battery post.

    • 3

Connect the positive cable from the battery charger to the positive battery post. Connect the negative battery charging cable to the negative jumper cable.

    • 4

Select the voltage on the charger, if applicable, by setting the switch to the correct voltage. This is dependent on both the battery voltage and the charger type. If there is a rate switch, which will be measured in amperage, set accordingly. The lower the amperage setting, the longer the battery will take to charge. The higher the amperage setting, the less time it will take to charge but damage may result if the amperage is set too high. A good medium is a 10 amperage setting, which will generally charge a battery overnight.

Plug the charger in and allow the battery to fully charge.
