Piper Cub Performance Specs

The Piper Cub is perhaps the most famous aircraft to take to the skies in general aviation's history. With its distinctive yellow paint scheme and tandem seat design, this tail dragger has seen varied service, such as a World War II scout aircraft and in modern times often is used for cropdusting.
  1. Power and Performance

    • The Piper J-3 Cub has a 65 horsepower engine and boasts a 76-knot top speed. It's cruising speed is a docile 65 knots with a stalling speed of 33 knots in a dirty configuration. A dirty configuration refers to flaps down.

    Weight and Range

    • The Piper J-3 Cub has a maximum gross weight of 1220 pounds. This includes all fuel and passengers. Sitting empty on the runway, the J-3 weighs a mere 680 pounds. It has a fuel capacity of 9 gallons, giving this aircraft a range of 146 nautical miles.

    Takeoff and Landing

    • On takeoff the J-3 requires 370 feet of runway to get off the ground but requires 730 feet of distance before it will be able to clear a 50-foot obstacle. Upon landing the J-3 will require only 290 feet of runway to stop. If an obstacle of at least 50 feet obstructs the runway, the J-3 will require 470 feet to complete its ground roll.
