Mitsubishi Atd-X Specifications

The Mitsubishi ATD-X is a fifth generation stealth fighter jet, being developed to bring the Japanese Air Force into the 21st century. It is being developed by the Japanese Ministry of Defense and the Technical Defense and Development Institute and is expected to cost 1 billion yen to complete. The jet's name is an acronym which stands for Advanced Technology Demonstrator-X. The Japanese call the plane the "Shin-Shin" which means " One's Mind." The jet is scheduled to make its first flight in 2014.

Body
- The outer body design of the Atd-X mimics the American F-22 fighter jet. It can only accommodate one passenger, the pilot. The design is shaped so that flight noise is limited increasing arrival stealth and to limit wind resistance for improved flight speed and maneuverability.
Dimensions
- The Mitsubishi ATD-X has a total length of 46.5 feet. It has a wingspan length of 29.85 feet. It has a maximum height, at the cockpit dome, of 14.8 feet. Its maximum takeoff weight is eight tons. It has a dry thrust power of 10 tons, which increases to 15 tons when after-burners are used.
Engine
- The engine design included in the Shin-Shin's proto-type is a set of XF5-1 twin-engines.The engine design, like the plane itself, is in the early stages of development. The turbo fan engine is built for improved speed and in-air control. It is equipped with super cruse and 3D thrust vectoring with three paddles per engine nozzle. The nozzles in the original design were uncovered, which could pose a problem for silence and stealth attributes of the aircraft.
Other Equippment
- Other equipment included in the Japanese design are a stealth radar jamming device, fly-by-light aircraft controls and advanced active phased array radar.
