Homemade Plywood Pontoons

Pontoons are generally used to make a pontoon boat or raft because they easily float on water. Building your own pontoon boats using plywood and other materials that can be easily found at hardware stores can be more affordable than purchasing a pontoon boat. These types of boats are great for lakes and rivers, where the water is calm and predictable.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 2 by 4s, 8-feet long
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Eye bolts
  • Washers
  • Nuts
  • 4 55-gallon plastic barrels

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Select an area close to water to build the pontoon boat, as this will allow immediate testing once it is completed.

    • 2

Lay the sheet of plywood on a flat surface. Screw one two by four perpendicularly to the center of the sheet of plywood. It should be centered so that approximately two feet of the two by four hangs over each side of the plywood board.

    • 3

Screw a second two by four alongside the side, a foot from the original two by four. Repeat this step on the opposite end of the plywood board so that there are four two by fours in total.

    • 4

Drill holes through each of the two by fours, about one inch from the end of the wooden boards. Insert the eye bolts into the holes and thread a washer through them, using the nuts to tighten the bolts and secure them to the boards.

    • 5

Place one barrel evenly between the four bolts on one corner of the pontoon. The barrels will be used to keep the boat afloat like a pontoon.

    • 6

Insert one end of the steel cable through the eye of one of the bolts and use the cable clamp to clamp it and secure it. Wrap the cable around the barrel and insert the end of the cable into the other bolt on the unchanged two by four. Tighten the rope around the barrel to make it secure. Cut the excess cable with cable cutters.

    • 7

Repeat steps five and six for each corner of the pontoon boat so a barrel is placed at each end of the boat. This way the boat will float equally along the water.

    • 8

Test the boat for durability and buoyancy before taking it out onto the water. This will help prevent accidents once it is out on the water.
