How to Use Gyros in an RC Airplane

A gyro in a remote control airplane senses the plane's rotation in flight and sends signals to smooth and straighten its flight. You can fly an RC plane without a gyro, but the plane's flight might be choppy and wobbly. The gyro will automatically adjust the plane's pitch and yaw when a change in air currents causes rotation in the plane or the plane's design gives little resistance to the plane's rotation. You can adjust the gyro to give it more or less control over the plane's rotation.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that the RC airplane's gyro has been installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Adjust the gyro's sensitivity level for your flight plan. A gyro that is too sensitive will wag. If you are doing aerobatics, choose a low setting or it will fight you. Set the gyro's sensitivity level by moving the gyro's control stick on its transmitter to the appropriate level.

    • 3

Test the gyro's sensitivity setting. Fly the RC plane. If you sense the gyro is over correcting, lower the gyro's sensitivity level. If the RC plane's flight is too wobbly, increase the gyro's sensitivity level.
